    Thoreson (Vandenberg), Grace Grace Thoreson passed away on April 7, 2004 in Little Rock, Arkansas. She was born on November 15, 1920 to Ann (West) and John Vandenberg in Clintonville, Wisconsin. She was the cherished companion to husband Ernest H. Thoreson for 60 years; a loving and giving mother to children: James Thoreson of Ferndale, Arkansas; Van Thoreson and his late wife Barbara of Plano, Texas; and Jean McClymont and husband David of Ferndale, Arkansas. Grace was a fun Grandma to Kristy Robinson, David Thoreson, Adam McClymont and Ian McClymont. She is survived by wonderful brothers and sisters: Fran Behnke of Appleton; Rose Zielke and husband Clyde of Oshkosh; David Vandenberg and wife Carol of Genesee Depot; and Al Vandenberg and wife Kathy of Green Bay. She will be missed by numerous nieces and nephews. Grace was preceded in death by sisters: Agnes, Clara and Dorothy; and brothers: Jerome, Jack, Urban and James. A funeral mass celebrating Grace's life will be officiated by her cousin, Father Bob Vandenberg, at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Combined Locks, on Saturday, May 22nd at 11 a.m. Visitation will be one hour before the service. A graveside service will immediately follow at St. John's Cemetery at Little Chute.

  • Note: Loving husband and exceptional dad, David Thomas Vandenberg, 82 of Genesee Depot, Wisconsin passed away in Oconomowoc, WI at 9:41pm on November 12, 2016 with his Wife and Sons by his side.


    Mr. Vandenberg was born in Appleton, Wisconsin. He was raised by his sisters Frances, Grace and Rosemary. David attended Saint Joseph’s Orphanage of Green Bay, Wisconsin together with brothers Aloysious and Jack. In 1952 he graduated from Saint John’s High School in Little Chute, Wisconsin where he played on the basketball team, was a tackle for the football team, and a member of the Skulls, a gang of boys who still keep track of one another today. After returning from Germany via a stint in the Army, David received a track scholarship and in 1958 graduated with a Master’s degree in Education from the University of Wyoming. David taught english in Puerto Rico and in Chicago’s inner city, after which David spent 36 years with Houghton Mifflin publishing company selling textbooks to Wisconsin’s schools. For 49 1/2 wonderful years David was married to Carol Herzog. They traveled the world together and raised two Sons.


    David is survived by his wife Carol, his brother Aloysious (Kathy) of Ashwaubenon Wisconsin, sister Rosemary (Clyde) Zielke of Oshkosh, WI, his two sons, David L. (Allison Lenz) of Jackson, Wyoming and Jonathan of Plum Island Massachusetts and grandchildren Sadie and Emma.


    David was an avid cyclist, skier, conversationalist and voracious reader. He was a consummate husband and father and was emphatically interested in the lives of all those who crossed his path.


    A commemoration of David’s life will be celebrated at a later date with friends and family. As per his wishes and with the help of his Wife, Sons and Granddaughters, David’s ashes will be scattered across the globe.

    Relatives have received word of the death of Jack Vandenberg, 26, San Francisco, Calif., in a traffic accident Thursday morning on the west coast.
    Vandenberg, son of John Vandenberg, route 2, Appleton, lived in Appleton for about 12 years. Relatives were given no details about the accident.
    He was born April 4, 1931, in Appleton. Survivors include the father; three brothers, Urban, Conoga, CAlif., Alfred, Oshkosh, and David, Little Chute; four sisters, Mrs. George Sonnleiter, Visalia, Calif., Mrs. Ernest Thoreson, Gary, Ind., Mrs. Ralph Grunwald, Oshkosh, and Mrs. Walter Joosten, Little Chute.

    Mrs. Harry (Mae West) Vandenberg, 612 E. South River St., age 63, passed away unexpectedly at 7:30 PM Thursday on her way to Sacred Heart Church. She was born December 26, 1897 in the town of Kaukauna and lived in that vicinity until moving to Appleton 25 years ago. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church; Christian Mothers and the Ladies Aid Society.
    Mrs. Vandenberg is survived by her husband Harry Vandenberg; four daughters, Mrs. Earl (Delores) Walker, Town of Menasha; Mrs. Charles (Lucille) Post, Madison; Mrs. Allen (Rita) Laux, Appleton; Miss Agnes, at home; nine sons, Arthur, Larsen; Ambrose, Elmer, Richard, and Paul, Appleton; Harvey, Kimberly; Floyd, U S Army; Raymond and Alvin at home; nine brothers, Harry, William and Clarence West, Milwaukee; Joseph, Lawrence, George, Peter, Raymond and Edward West, Appleton; 40 grandchildren.
    Funeral services will be held at 10 AM Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the cortege forming at 9:30AM at the Brittschneider Funeral Home. Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 PM Sunday. Rosary will be prayed at 8 PM Sunday at the funeral home.

    Harry Vandenberg

    Formerly of 612 E. Southriver St. Age 88, was called to his eternal home Saturday, January 19, 1985 at St. Paul Nursing Home, Kaukauna. He was born December 21, 1896 in Kimberly son of the late Henry and Mary Jansen Vandenberg. He married Mary West who preceded him in death on September 21, 1961. He retired from Riverside Paper Company in 1961. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I and was a member of Sacred Heart Parish.

    Survivors include four daughters and sons in-law; Earl and Delores "Walker, Appleton; Charles and Lucy Post, Stevens Point; Allen and Rita Laux, Appleton; Bernard and Agnes Merline, De Pere; seven sons and nine daughters in-law, Ambrose and Florence, Orlando, Florida; Elmer and Agnes, Appleton; Richard and Freida, Appleton; Raymond and Kay, Appleton; Floyd and LaVerne, Little Chute; Al and Bev, Appleton; Lucille Vandenberg, Appleton; Sally Vandenberg, Winchester; 76 grandchildren and 43 great grandchildren.

    He was preceded in death by two sons; Arthur and Paul; 13 brothers and sisters.

    The celebration of the mass of ressurection will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may call at Brettschneider-Trettin-Lederer Funeral Chapel Monday from 4 until 9 p.m. and Tuesday 8:30 a.m. until the cortege leaves for the church. There will be a prayer service 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral chapel. A memorial fund has been established.

    Age 51, passed away Sunday morning unexpectedly. He was born February 2, 1920 in Freedom and had been a Larso resident for the past 20 years, and had been employed by American Can Company for the past 25 years, and was a member of there Quarter Century Club.
    He was a member of the VFW Nicolet Post of Menasha, a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Winneconne and the Holy Name Society of the church. He was a veteran of World War II.

    Survivors are his wife, Marcella; his father, Harry Vandenberg, Appleton; a daughter, Mrs. Dennis [Darlene] Freks, Larsen; four sons, Timothy, Neenah, Jeffery, at home, Steven, Larsen, and Daniel, Appleton; eight brothers, Ambrose, Elmer, Richard, Harvey, Paul, Raymond, Floyd and Alvin, all of Appleton; four sisters, Mrs. Earl [Dolores] Walker, Appleton; Mrs. Charles [Lucile] Post, Stevens Point; Mrs. Al [Rita] Laux, De Pere; Mrs. Bernard [Agnes] Merlin, De Pere; and six grandchildren.

    Funeral services will be held at 10:15 a.m. Wednesday at the Kessler Funeral Home and at 11 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church at Winneconne. The Rev. Eugene Schmidt officiating.     Vandenberg, Marcella "Sally" Marcella "Sally" Vandenberg, age 84, of Larsen, Wisconsin, died Thursday morning September 16, 2004 at ManorCare Health Services in Appleton, Wisconsin following a brief battle with cancer. She was born on October 9, 1919 in Appleton to the late Edwin and Lydia (Erdman) Petznick. Sally graduated from Appleton Senior High School in 1937. She married Arthur Vandenberg in March of 1947. They made their home in Menasha and in 1953 moved to the Town of Winchester where they farmed. Sally's husband Arthur preceded her in death in January of 1972. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church of Winneconne. Sally is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Darlene and Dennis Frerks, of Winneconne; four sons and daughters-in-law: Tim and Nancy Vandenberg, and Jeffery and Kathleen Vandenberg, all of Neenah; Steve and Joyce Vandenberg, of Larsen; Daniel and Zinnia Vandenberg, of Miriam, Kansas; one brother and sister-in-law, Newell and Marion Petznick, of Menasha; nine grandchildren; four great-granddaughters; three sisters and one brother-in-law: Lila Dorschner, of Menasha; Ruth Bevers, of Little Chute; and Eldine and Elmer Schultz, of Salem, South Dakota; and many nieces and nephews. Along with her parents and husband, Sally was preceded in death by three grandchildren. A Memorial Mass will be held on Friday, September 24, 2004 at 11 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church, Winneconne with Rev. Leroy Smet officiating. Interment to follow in the Winneconne Cemetery.     Age 77, formerly of Appleton, passed away on October 14, 1999, at home surrounded by his family after a lengthy battle with heart disease. He was born August 17, 1922, in Combined Locks, the son of Harry and Mary (West) Vandenberg. On May 17, 1952 he married the former Florence Schmit. He was a WWII veteran and retired Operating Engineer. Am found great joy spending time with his children and grandchildren.
    He is survived by his wife, Florence; son, James (Mary Beth) Green Bay; daughters, Diane (Robert) VanderZanden, Darboy; Joanne (James) Gregorius, Oconto Falls; Joyce (Brian) Szikney, Orlando, Fl; Sharon (Bill) Shaw, Chuluota, Fl; Suzanne (Walt) Howard, Winter Park, Fl; Jane (Larry) Hostetter, Orlando, Fl. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Jeff and Eric VanderZanden; Cailin, Kevin, and Danny Vandenberg; Steven, Patrick, and John Gregorius; Shelly, Jessica, and Matthew Szikney; Nicci and Michelle Howard; Amanda Lovelace and Jacob Hostetter. He is further survived by his brothers, Elmer (Agnes), Appleton; Harvey (Barbara) Appletpn; Raymond (Kay) Appleton; Floyd (Laverine), Little Chute; Alvin (Bev), Appleton; sisters, Delores (Earl) Walker, Appleton; Lucille (Chuck) Post, Stevens Point; Rita (Alan) Lauz, Appleton; Agnes (Bernard) Merline, Green Bay; sisters in-law; Sally, Winchester; Lucy, Appleton; Freida, Appleton. In addition, he is survived by his wifes brother and sisters, and many nieces and nephews.

    He was preceded in death by his mother, father, and brothers Arthur and Paul. He was followed in death a few day later by his brother, Richard.

    A funeral mass was held in Oviedo, Fl,. on Monday October 18, 1999. A memorial mass will be held Monday November 8, 1999 at 6 PM at St. Paul's Catholic Church, Combined Locks, with the Rev. Robert Vandenberg officiating followed by a gathering after the mass. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established.

    Age 81, formerly of Appleton, WI, died Friday morning, June 20, 2003 at Sharpe Care in Oconto Falls. She was born January 21, 1922 in the Town of Ellington, WI to Roy and Elizabeth (Griesbach) Schmit. She grew up in Greenville and as a young woman, worked for Kimberly-Clark. On May 17, 1952 she married Ambrose Vandenberg in Appleton. Following their marriage the couple lived in Appleton until moving to Florida in 1973 where Florence worked at J.C. Penney’s. She was active in the Catholic parishes she attended in both Wisconsin and Florida and was a member of the Third Order of St. Francis. Florence cared deeply for her children and grandchildren.


    She is survived by her seven children, Diane (Robert) VanderZanden, Darboy; James (Mary Beth) Vandenberg, Green Bay; Joanne (James) Gregorius, Oconto Falls; Joyce (Brian) Szikney, Orlando, FL; Sharon (William) Shaw, Summerville, SC; Susanne (Walt) Howard, Winter Park, FL; Jane (Larry) Hostetter, Orlando, FL; 16 grandchildren; four sisters, LaVerne Bies, Donna (Melvin) Koehler all of TX; Margaret Wulterkens, Combined Locks; Patricia Sullivan, Greenville.


    She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Ambrose, on October 14, 1999 and one brother, Charles.


    Visitation with the urn present will be held at St. Paul’s Catholic Church, 410 Wallace St., Combined Locks after 4:00 P.M. Monday, July 7, 2003 until the time of services. Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held 5:00 P.M. Monday at the church with Fr. Robert Vandenberg officiating. Burial of the urn will take place in the church cemetery. Jones Funeral Service (920-848-2222) in Oconto Falls is serving the Vandenberg family.


    In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, a memorial fund will be established.
