    Age 85, passed away on April 20, 2002, at Franciscan Care Center. He was born June 19, 1916 in Kimberly to Henry and Frances (Ver Voort) Vanden Boogaard. He Married Audrey Beschta on April 29, 1946. Bern and Audrey enjoyed 55 years together. Bern was employed at Kimberly Clark, Kimberly Mill as a carpenter for 42 years until his retirement in 1979. Bern served in the United States Army in World War II, Army Corps of Engineers. He also served on the Kimberly Village Board as a trustee for 32 years. He was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church and the Kimberly American Legion Post # 60.

    Survivors include his wife Audrey; two daughters and sons-in-law: Pat (Tom) Asman of Kimberly and Mary (Len) Milton of Darboy; four sons: Jim (Sheree) Vanden Boogaard of Oshkosh, Garry (Jackie) Vanden Boogaard of Menasha, Kim (Cheryl) Vanden Boogaard of Greenville, Bob Vanden Boogaard of Kimberly; nine grandchildren: Jeff Asman, Randy and Anne Asman, Jenny and Jason Chevalier, Laurie and Pete Ritger, Marria and Gary Marg, Jessie and Daniel Pickney, Sarah Vanden Boogaard, and Ben and Cory Vanden Boogaard; four great-grandchildren: Marley (with whom he shared his birthdate), Will and Luke Chevalier, and Daniel Pickney; three brothers and sisters-in-law: Matt (Marion) Vanden Boogaard of Kimberly, Paul (Evelyn) Vanden Boogaard of Appleton, and Elmer (Opal) Vanden Boogaard of Appleton; two sisters and one brother-in-law: Mary (Edward) Prellwitz of Savannah, Georgia and Maxine Wichman of Kimberly; two sisters-in-law: Dorothy Vanden Boogaard of Little Chute and Esther Vanden Boogaard of Appleton. Bern is further survived by three sisters-in-law: Joan Gruentzel of Appleton, Marcie Beschta of Appleton, and Bette Beschta of Appleton; three brothers-in-law: Jerry Beschta of Hortonville, Vin Beschta of Greendale, and Gene (Carol) Beschta of Appleton.

    Bern is preceded in death by two brothers: Vin and Robert; sister, Esther Schwab; brothers-in-law: Otto Wichman, Norbert Schwab, Stanley Beschta, Carlton Beschta, Donald Beschta, Gene Gruentzel, and Dick Brouillard; and sisters-in-law: Pat Brouillard and Mary Beschta.

    The funeral liturgy will be at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 23, 2002, at HOLY NAME CATHOLIC CHURCH, 600 East Kimberly Avenue, Kimberly, with Fr. Dennis Bergsbaken officiating. Friends will be received at the church on Tuesday from 2:00 p.m. until the time of service. Burial will be at Holy Name Cemetery.

  • Note: Matt Vanden Boogaard, age 93, of Kimberly, was surrounded by the love of his family when he entered into eternal life on Saturday, February 4, 2012. Waiting to greet him was his wife of 65 years, Marian, two sons-in-law, his parents, brothers and sister and many other relatives. He was born May 29, 1918, in Kimberly, the son of Henry and Frances (Ver Voort) Vanden Boogaard. On April 17, 1943, while serving his country in San Francisco, California, he married Marian Jean Melendy with whom he spent the next 65 years. Upon returning from the service they settled in Kimberly and remained there to raise their family. Matt was a lifelong member of Holy Name/Holy Spirit Church. He enjoyed spending his leisure time with his family at Shawano Lake and later at Clover Leaf Lakes.

    Matt was a very active man and was especially involved with his church, the community and the William Verhagen American Legion Post #60 of Kimberly. Over the years, he had many occupations which required him to travel around the state, something he enjoyed very much. In his retirement, he was always helping someone on a project, volunteering somewhere or going for his daily walk. Matt enjoyed being with his family and following his grandchildren's many endeavors. He loved life, stayed active and was healthy for 90+ years. In 2010, he was honored as a veteran of WWII and traveled to Washington D.C. on the Old Glory Honor Flight.

    He is survived by his five children: John (Pat) Vanden Boogaard, DePere; Kathy (and the late Dick) Hurst, Appleton; Dick (Mary Lou) Vanden Boogaard, Kimberly; Kristine (and the late Bill) Gerhardt, Appleton and Dave (Kathy) Vanden Boogaard, Little Chute; thirteen grandchildren, John Patrick Vanden Boogaard and Amy (Geoff) Stenson; Chris (Becky) Hurst, Paula (Scott) Reaves, Shelly (Shawn) Manisto and Katie (Craig) Stevens; Tracy (Jim) Schommer, Brad (Julee) Vanden Boogaard, Polly Vanden Boogaard and Laura (Alex) Smith; Dawn Marwitz; Ross Vanden Boogaard and Ben Vanden Boogaard; fifteen great grandchildren, Kate, Zachary and Evan Stenson; Cole and Luke Hurst; Lincoln Reaves; Kyle, Jake and Derek Manisto; Chase and Mya Stevens; Reece and Phin Schommer; Danielle and Carly Marwitz; and a great great grandson: Wyatt William Paulick. Matt is further survived by his sisters: Mary (Edward) Prellwitz, Savannah, Georgia and Maxine Wichman, Kimberly; sisters-in-law: Evelyn Vanden Boogaard, Appleton and Dorothy Vanden Boogaard, Appleton.

    He was preceded in death by his wife, Marian, his parents, his sister and brothers: Esther (Norb) Schwab, Bernard (Audrey) Vanden Boogaard, Paul Vanden Boogaard, Elmer (Opal) Vanden Boogaard, Bob Vanden Boogaard, Vin (Esther) Vanden Boogaard and brother-in-law: Otto Wichman.

    The Celebration of his life will be held at 12 p.m. noon on Saturday, February 11, 2012, at HOLY SPIRIT/HOLY NAME CHURCH, 600 East Kimberly Avenue, Kimberly, with Father Dave Pleier officiating. Burial will be in Holy Name Cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of mass. The family is requesting no flowers; a memorial fund has been established in his name.

    Vanden Boogaard, Elmer J.
    Elmer J. Vanden Boogaard, 89, Appleton, died Friday Oct. 2, 2009, at Grand Horizons after a short illness. He was born in Kimberly on July 20, 1920, to the late Henry and Frances (Ver Voort) Vanden Boogaard. While attending Kimberly High School, Elmer lettered in four sports and was offered a football scholarship to the University of Notre Dame. On July 16, 1945, he married Opal Jensen at St. Patrick's Cathedral in Chicago. Their witnesses were the janitor and the rectory cook. He then returned to his war duties in England. Elmer was a member of the William Verhagen American Legion Post 60 for over 60 years. He was also a member of St. Joseph Parish, Appleton. Elmer was named to the first athletic Hall of Fame at Kimberly High School. Elmer and Opal square danced with the Romeos and Calicos and enjoyed time spent at the family cottage on Nabor Road on Shawano Lake. She preceded him in death April 14, 2007. A strong advocate of Catholic education, Elmer endowed 9 students at Xavier High School. He was a strong philanthropist, especially to St. Elizabeth Hospital and the Green Bay Catholic Diocese.
    Elmer is survived by his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Nancy Randall and son Christopher Randall, Shreveport, LA; Carol (Ray) Jermstad, Appleton and daughter Sara (Tim) Andrew and son Joseph and daughter Madeleine, Neenah and sons Nick (Abby Sawyers) Jermstad, Plantsville, CT and Jesse (Dana Larson) Jermstad, Green Bay; Susan (Dan) Bowman, Appleton and daughter Angie Oleszko, Milaca, Minn., and sons Kurt Oleszko, Stevens Point and Russell Oleszko, Minneapolis, Minn.; William Vanden Boogaard, Tucson, Ariz., and sons Adam Vanden Boogaard, US Air Force State of Washington and Matthew Vanden Boogaard, Texas and their mother Lea; Bruce (Barb Bartel) Vanden Boogaard, Fremont; and Jack (Sandra Thompson) Vanden Boogaard, Appleton and sons Alex and Andrew Vanden Boogaard both of Appleton; sisters and brothers: Maxine Wichmann, Kimberly; Maridel (Ed) Prelwitz, Savannah, GA; Paul (Evelyn) Vanden Boogaard, Appleton; and Matt Vanden Boogaard, Kimberly; and sisters and brothers-in-law: Dorothy Vanden Boogaard, Freedom; Kathleen (LaVern) Weishoff, Manitowoc; Wayne Jensen, Montello; Bill Jensen, Florida; and James (Judy) Jensen, Washington.     In addition to his wife and parents, Elmer was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Richard Randall; father and mother-in-law, William and Angie Jensen; brothers and sister, Bernard (Audrey), Vince (Esther) and Robert Vanden Boogaard and Margaret Ester (Norb) Schwab; brothers and sisters-in-law, Otto Wichmann, Marian Vanden Boogaard, Mary Pat and LaVahn (Nadine) Jensen, Joyce Getschow-Walker (Herman and Birnam) and Arbutus (Joe) Kniece.
    Visitation will be held Tuesday Oct. 6, 2009, at ST. JOSEPH PARISH (404 W. Lawrence St. Appleton) beginning at 1:30 p.m. until the time of Mass at 2:30 p.m. The Rev. Larry Abler O.F.M.
